Policy Dialogue on Sustainable Solid Waste Management in Penang (27 February 2007)

Socio-economic & Environmental Research Institute (SERI) and the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), through the Southeast Asia Urban Environmental Management Applications (SEA-UEMA) Project,  jointly organised a "Policy Dialog on Sustainable Solid Waste Management in Penang" together with Seberang Perai Municipal Council (MPSP).

The dialogue took place on 27 Feb 2007 at Sunway Hotel, Seberang Jaya, Penang, with the following objectives:-

  • Understanding general Solid Waste Management (SWM) problems, policies and strategies in Penang as well as Environmental Management Systems;
  • Understanding the lessons learned from the Alumni Demonstration Project (ADP) implemented by SERI as well as policy implications arising out of it;
  • Identification of the problems and constraints in policy translation and implementation;
  • Establishment of SWM policy recommendations and framework for translation of strategic plans into implementation through community leaders to the local government.

The event was officiated by Yang Berhormat Dato' Dr Teng Hock Nan, State Executive Councillor for Local Government, Information and Public Relations.
