UNDP-PPPUE
Community Waste Recycling Program

INTRODUCTION

This project intends to bring the message of recycling to grassroots communities. Whilst it is hoped that the sale of recyclables would help to generate funds, the ultimate goal is for the communities to look upon recycling not only as a money making venture but also as a social responsibility.

The project involves tripartite partnerships from the government, private and civil society sectors:-

Government
Municipal Council of Penang Island (MPPP)

Civil Society
Residents Associations (RTs), JKKK and other community based organizations

Private sector
Recycling agents and industries, developers, etc.

This project places heavy emphasis on community participation, education and awareness raising. The Socio-Economic & Environmental Research Institute (SERI) is the Project Holder and Secretariat and the implementation phase started on 1st February 2003 and covers 10 consecutive months.

Three demonstration sites were chosen for the pilot phase. They are Weld Quay (clan jetties residents), Taman Alor Vista (high density low cost housing) and Kampung Seronok (a traditional malay village).
